Booking pace: do you know if next month is ahead or behind?
"We have 1,240 nights on the books for next month." Is that good? Most hotels can't answer — because a raw number without a reference point is not information. Here is why that happens, and how a pace report turns it into a verdict while there is still time to act.
The pain: you find out when the month arrives
Every operator knows the rhythm. A month turns out soft, and the discounting starts inside the month — panic rates that dilute the business you already had. Or a month turns out strong, and you realise too late that you sold most of it at last year's rate. Either way, the P&L delivers the news when nothing can be done about it.
The frustrating part: the answer was sitting in your PMS the whole time. Every booking, with its creation date, was right there. What was missing was context — compared to what?
Why it happens: a forecast is not a pace
A standard occupancy forecast shows where you'll land if nothing changes. It cannot tell you whether today's position is normal, because "1,240 nights, 54 days out" might be excellent for a shoulder month and alarming for your peak season. The only fair comparison is against the same month last year at the same distance from arrival — how many nights were on the books then, at this exact point in the booking window?
Most systems can't answer that, because they store the current state of bookings, not the history of how the books built up day by day. So pace analysis has stayed a luxury of chain hotels with revenue-management teams and separate analytics tools, while independent properties run revenue meetings on gut feel and a spreadsheet someone updates when there's time.

- What is a hotel booking pace report?
- It compares the room nights on the books for a future month with what you had for the same month at the same point last year — the same number of days before arrival. - Do I need a revenue manager or a separate RMS to use it?
